This is the dramatic moment police talk down a distressed man from a highway bridge in Michigan.

Police officers in Warren responded to multiple 911 calls on Easter Sunday, April 20, reporting a man attempting to jump from an overpass.

Concerned residents said they saw the man climbing the fence above I-696 at the Groesbeck interchange.

Bodycam footage shows authorities arriving to find the 32-year-old local seated atop the fence, appearing ready to jump.

Officers quickly initiated crisis intervention, speaking calmly and empathetically to de-escalate the situation.

Lieutenant John Gajewski of the Warren Police Department said the officers' actions reflected their training in emotional intelligence and communication.

He added: 'For nearly five minutes, they worked to connect with him. You see the officers talk to this man adult to adult, not as a suspect.'

Eventually, the man was convinced to come down safely.

Reports said he had a history of mental illness, and a fight with his wife led him to the bridge that day.

The officer added: 'We want the public to know—call us before you climb on the overpass, call us before you pick up the gun, before you take the pills. Let's prevent a tragedy from even occurring.'

The man was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. He has since returned home.
