NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Nashville Zoo is celebrating a tiny but significant arrival—a male southern pudu fawn born on April 28 to first-time parents Bosa and Pacu.

This marks the zoo’s first-ever birth of a southern pudu, the world’s smallest deer species. The fawn and his mother can be seen in the zoo’s Expedition Peru exhibit. The announcement also coincides with Bosa’s first Mother’s Day as a new mom.

Southern pudus are native to the dense forests of southern Chile and southwestern Argentina. Known for their solitary nature and shy demeanor, they use their small size to navigate thick vegetation and avoid predators.

Zoo officials say the birth is an important step in conservation and education efforts surrounding this unique species.
