KEOKUK, Iowa — A burglary-in-progress call on June 3 turned into an unexpected wildlife encounter for Keokuk police officers.

Responding to the scene, officers were given a suspect description that was anything but typical: around 4 feet tall, furry, and with “doe” brown eyes. As it turned out, the suspect was a deer — not a burglar.

Body-worn camera footage shared by the Keokuk Police Department shows officers safely using a catch pole to remove the deer from what appeared to be a commercial or non-residential property. The deer was unharmed and released back to the wild.
