Panicked driver crashes into police station entrance in Bangkok
This is the shocking moment a panicked driver crashed into the entrance of a police station in Thailand.
Aphichai, 36, was making a right turn when he accidentally pressed on the accelerator instead of the brakes along a road in Bangkok.
CCTV footage shows his grey Mitsubishi Triton truck driving over a traffic island before slamming into the automatic glass doors of the Yannawa Police Station at around 10:50 pm on Sunday.
Police detained Aphichai and administered a breathalyser test, which showed he was completely sober at the time of the crash.
The inquiry officer said: 'The test result was 0 milligrams per cent. In addition, no one was injured at the scene. Only government property and Mr Aphichai's car were damaged.'
The motorist reportedly admitted he was new to driving. He said: 'I have only been driving for about two to three months, and I was familiar with that route since I used it regularly. But on that day, I came down from the Silom Expressway, turned onto Sriwiang Road, and was about to make a right onto Susak Road when I accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake. That's when I lost control of the car and crashed.'
Officers said there were no injuries, but the damaged door will need to be repaired.
Aphichai was charged with reckless driving, causing damage to property, and was fined 2,000 baht (45 GBP) on the spot.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
