Rail chiefs closed a level crossing where youngsters have been taking dangerous selfies.

The Wilthorpe footpath level crossing in Barnsley, England, has been formally closed for six months after several risky incidents.

Network Rail recorded 15 cases of dangerous behaviour at the site over just two months.

CCTV footage shows groups of locals lying on the live rail, placing objects on the tracks, blocking gates, and using the crossing as a backdrop for photographs.

Barnsley Council approved a six-month closure under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to ensure public safety, following an emergency closure in May prompted by the alarming behaviour.

Andy Cunningham, route level crossing manager for Network Rail, said: 'The footage we released in May showed exactly why urgent action was necessary at Wilthorpe footpath crossing.

'The shocking misuse and disregard for safety is the worst I've ever seen, with people risking their own and others' lives.

'We knew this was a popular walking route, so we did not take the decision lightly. However, since the initial closure, we have received messages from residents supporting our decision, recognising it was the right step for the community's safety.'

Cunningham also visited the site with local councillors to examine nearby footpaths and discuss permanent measures to prevent further incidents and avoid potential tragedy.
