A helicopter crashed in the mountains of Indonesia, killing all four people onboard.

The aircraft reportedly lost contact while flying to Timika City in Western New Guinea at around 1:40 pm local time on Wednesday.

Authorities later located the wreckage of the AS350 B3 helicopter, operated by PT Intan Angkasa, in a valley in the Jila mountains of Mimika Regency.

Footage shows the helicopter, registered PK-IWS, smashed into pieces as rescue teams sifted through the carnage.

Mohammad Syafii, chief of the national search and rescue agency, said: 'On board were two crew and two passengers delivering logistics to remote communities in the province.'

The helicopter departed from Ilaga Airport in Puncak Regency. He said another helicopter on the same route landed safely in Timika, and later retraced the route to aid in the search.

He added: 'The crew eventually located the wreckage of PK-IWS on a steep mountain slope at an altitude of more than 10,000 feet.'

Officials said the wreckage was set to be collected today, subject to weather conditions.

The cause of the crash was not yet clarified.
