Autistic child rescued from roof of family home in Oregon
Police rescued an autistic child from the roof of a family home in Oregon.
Officers from the Sherwood Police Department and firefighters from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue retrieved the non-verbal young boy, who was standing on the roof and was at risk of jumping, on October 3.
His grandmother, who was unable to bring him down safely, along with concerned neighbours, called 911 to report the incident, prompting authorities to rush to the scene.
Bodycam footage shows one of the officers climbing onto the house. He then calmly called to the youngster and, along with his colleague, held onto him to keep him secure until the firefighters arrived.
The team then carefully assisted the youngster onto the ladder.
Police and firefighters safely brought the boy down and reunited him with his family.
The department emphasised that this incident shows the unpredictable behaviours sometimes seen in children on the autism spectrum.
Experts said that children with autism may be drawn to heights, water, or other hazards due to curiosity, sensory seeking, or difficulty recognising danger.
Authorities said that interacting with individuals with autism requires calm communication, patience, and understanding. People on the spectrum may respond to fear, stress, or sensory overload by climbing, wandering, or running into unsafe situations.
Police urged the community to call 911 immediately if they witness a similar emergency, stressing that autism can present differently in every person and behaviours often reflect attempts to self-regulate or communicate.
