ASBURY PARK, N.J. — Police officers and a local resident rescued an 8-year-old child from a burning home Monday morning, officials said.

Around 8:44 a.m. Aug. 25, Asbury Park police and fire units responded to a house fire on Prospect Avenue. As smoke and flames spread, the child appeared at a second-floor window before jumping. Officer Dewitt Bacon, Officer John Walsh and resident Joseph Dunbar worked together to catch the child and bring them safely to the ground.

The child was treated by Asbury Park firefighters and transported to a hospital for smoke inhalation and evaluation. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, while social services and the Red Cross assisted displaced residents.

“Asbury Park police officers train for fast-moving, dangerous situations, and yesterday’s rescue shows the value of that training and the strength of our community,” Police Director John B. Hayes said, commending the rescuers’ bravery.
