New Zealand landslide at campsite leaves two dead and six missing
A landslide at a holiday campsite in New Zealand has killed at least two people and left six others missing.
The disaster struck the popular park at the base of Mount Maunganui on the morning of January 21.
Footage captured by Alister McHardy shows emergency responders working at the scene in Tauranga, assessing damage and searching for survivors.
At the base, thick debris blankets the campsite, including large boulders, broken tree trunks, mud, and scattered vegetation. Tents, caravans, mobile homes, and facilities such as toilets and shower blocks were crushed, with some partially buried.
Several campervans and caravans were displaced, swept into pathways or even hot pools, while debris blocked access roads.
Police, fire, and rescue teams, supported by heavy machinery and sniffer dogs, are assessing slope stability, searching for survivors, and clearing paths through the wreckage.
Authorities continue to look for six people still missing, including two teenagers believed trapped under the debris.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described the tragedy, saying the nation is 'heavy with grief' following the disaster.
He added: 'The weather events of the past 48 hours have been a profound tragedy, claiming lives and devastating livelihoods.
'These losses are deeply shattering, and New Zealand is heavy with grief.'
Officials said the landslide was triggered by intense rainfall from a tropical low moving across the North Island, which saturated the soil and caused multiple slips in the area.
A state of emergency has been declared in the Bay of Plenty, with road closures, evacuations, and appeals for witnesses currently underway.
