When most people hear the word hyena the first image that comes to mind is that of a scary, blood-thirsty predator that eats rotten meat. It is very hard to imagine that these creatures in actual fact can also put a smile on your face and make any person laugh. It was during a safari in the Kruger National Park, South Africa that we came across a single hyena lying in the middle of the road during the late afternoon. Suddenly the lone hyena rolls onto its back and starts the most hilarious back scratching move. With its belly and all four feet up in the air, the hyena maneuvers itself from side to side while scratching its back on the gravel road, looking like it is performing a very entertaining and funny dance move. This funny and rarely seen behaviour by the hyena was due to an enormous number of flies that pestered the animal during its late afternoon rest. Rolling onto its back and scratching was this hyena’s only way to get rid of the flies and itching on his back. One hardly ever see hyenas scratching themselves let alone scratching their backs. In the end the hyena enjoyed a good back scratch and at the same time entertained us to an unexpected funny move right in front of us in the middle of the road.
