An elephant calf was rescued from a well in Bangurasingh village in Dhenkanal district in eastern India on February 18.

A herd of 50 elephants was spotted in the vicinity of the village yesterday. Late night, the calf accidentally separated from its herd and fell into the well.

The villagers heard the jumbo distressed cries and informed forest officials. The authorities rushed to the spot and rescued the jumbo.

“We are trying to unite the calf with the herd,” an official said.
