Dramatic visuals showed a wild elephant running down the road, causing panic among locals in Guwahati city, the capital of north east India's Assam state.

The incident took place in the afternoon on Ar 30.

Hundreds of people, including forest department officials, also ran- some in hope of catching the elephant, others in order to save their lives.

Earlier in the day, the elephant had strayed into a residential area in Panjabari area of the city, triggering a similar chaos.

Reports said the mammal was later tranquilised and moved to the Assam state zoo in Guwahati. It will later be moved to its original habitat in Amchang Reserve forest.

The elephant had come out of the forest on Saturday in search of food.
