Panic ensued among residents of a village in eastern India's West Bengal state after a wild elephant strayed away from the forests and entered the residential area.

The incident took place on Aug. 16 near Birpara region of the state's Alipurduar district.

Visuals showed a group of locals chasing away the male elephant.

The elephant and locals braved the torrential rain to venture out. The pachyderm was seen parading through the road, as nervous commuters looked on.

Reports said the pachyderm entered one of the residences and drank a locally fermented rice drink.

The tipsy elephant then went on a rampage, destroying vehicles.

However, forest officials were able to drag it out of the village and send it back to its natural habitat.
