Hundreds of earthworms emerge from soil due to coronavirus disinfectants in Indonesia
This is the creepy moment hundreds of worms squiggle together out of a hole like a scene out of a horror film.
Footage shows the slimy earthworms crawling out of the soil last Saturday (April 18) in Socokangsi, central Java, Indonesia.
Concerned residents said that there were similar scenes in other parts of central Java over the weekend.
Officials believe the worms have been driven out by disinfectants sprayed around their habitat to curb the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus .
Kabar Klaten said: ''I've never seen so many worms come out of the ground at the same time. It was like they were following each other. It reminded me of a horror film.''
Rahayu, chief of the Jatinom sub-district told local media that coronavirus disinfectants that have seaped into the soil could be responsible.
She said: ''Because a lot of disinfectants were sprayed everywhere, the fertility of the soil has been impacted so it disturbed the earthworms, making them crawl out.''
Rahayu has instructed the village head not to kill the earthworms as they help keep the soil fertile. She also instructed for the spraying of disinfectants to cease.
Prabang Setyono, an environmental expert from Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Solo, said that recent volcanic activity in the area from Mount Merapimay have caused the temperature of the soil to increase and forced out the worms.
He said that it could therefore be unrelated to coronavirus disinfectants.
