Police cars hit with gunfire before Hemet pursuit suspect is arrested
At approximately 6:00 pm, Hemet Police Officers attempted a traffic stop on a red and gray Toyota Solara in the area of Domenigoni Parkway near California Ave. The vehicle was occupied by a male driver and a female passenger. The driver failed to yeild and a pursuit began heading westbound Domenigoni Parkway towards the Winchester area. Almost immediately after the pursuit began the suspect fired and the pursuing officer several times with a semi automatic handgun. The suspect proceeded northbound on Hwy 79 until reaching Hwy 74 where he fired his gun multiple times at Hemet PD and CHP officers while reloading at least once. During the pursuit, a Hemet PD unit collided with a white sedan at the intersection of Warren Rd and Florida Ave. The officer involved in the crash suffered only minor injuried and the other party was unharmed. The PD unit suffered major front end damage. The suspect eventually stopped at Hwy 74 and Juniper flats road. Officers initiated a felony stop and took the driver and female passenger into custody. The weapon was located and officers are still searching the area for shellcasings and other evidence. At least two police vehicles were struck by gunfire, a Hemet PD unit and a CHP unit. The cause for the pursuit or if the suspect was wanted for a major crime is unknown at this time. Apart from the officer who suffered minor injuries in the crash on Warren and Florida, no other officers or civilians were injured.
