A 74-year-old man was rescued by police after being loaded into a freezer overnight and assumed dead in India's Tamil Nadu on October 13.

Footage from the area of Salem shows police approaching the house as the man lay in the freezing chamber struggling to breathe.

Further emergency services arrive on the scene and give him medical attention after removing him from the box.

According to Suramangalam police, the man identified as Balasubramaniya Kumar is a resident of Kandampatti.

He was living with his 70-year-old younger brother Saravanan and his sister's daughter Geetha.

Due to his old age, he was suffering from ailments and was bedridden for the last two months.

Officials probing the incident said the 74-year-old man was recently discharged from a hospital in a critical condition.

However, his brother had asked for a freezer box as he allegedly waited for him to die and placed him inside the box overnight.

The executive who delivered the freezer, however, raised an alarm and alerted the officials after seeing the man move inside the freezer.

Officials stated that a case of negligent conduct has been registered while an investigation is underway.
