JP Smith, Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security, addressed a group of protesters outside South Africa's parliament. The protest, organised by biker group Ride to Freedom, opposes pending legislation which seeks to remove self defence as a valid reason to possess a firearm. Smith was there to collect a memorandum on behalf of Democratic Alliance (DA) member of parliament, Andrew Whitfield, who will present it to parliament.

As Smith was called up by Brent Van Der Westhuizen, leader of Ride to Freedom, he was heckled by a homeless man standing close by. Smith's metro police and law enforcement departments have received widespread criticism for victimising and criminalising poor and homeless people on the streets of Cape Town.
