A huge bearcat or binturong rampaged a boiled noodle stall in Indonesia before getting stuck inside a display case in a neighbouring grocery store warehouse.

Footage filmed in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra province, on Thursday night (10 February), shows the owner of a boiled noodle stall shocked by the binturong which then climbs around the ceiling.

The neighbours hit the plywood wall to get the binturong to come down.

Santi, the noodle shop owner, told Newsflare that they initially thought the animal was a large, thick-haired Angora cat, but after seeing it, it turned out to be a rare animal.

“The binturong finally jumped down and came out. We saw it run to the food stall next door, so we reported it to the officers to help arrest him,” Santi added.

Animal rescue teams who were called to the scene found the animal trapped in a display window in a grocery store warehouse.

Officers restrained the animal's head to tie its legs with rope. The binturong fought back and fled but was caught again and put in a cage.

Officers took the binturong to the fire department to check its condition before releasing it into its habitat.

Rescuer Zainal Abidin told Newsflare, “Binturong is thought to have come from the forest around the edge of the Sianok canyon. It's thought it was looking for food until he got lost in the settlement.”

The binturong is threatened by habitat loss due to logging and agribusiness, especially the oil palm industry.

It is also hunted for bushmeat, traditional medicine, and the pet trade.

A local coffee, made from beans that pass through a binturong’s digestive system, is also valued.
