Terrified schoolchildren take shelter as military planes 'attack village killing civilian' in Myanmar
Terrified schoolchildren sheltered in classrooms as military planes allegedly launched an airstrike on their village in eastern Myanmar.
Footage shows the youngsters covering their ears while lying on the ground hiding in a classroom as fighter jets flew overhead shortly before a barrage of explosions was heard in the Loikaw township of Kayah State on August 9.
Another clip shows armed individuals carrying rifles helping students evacuate to the nearby undergrowth.
Local media, citing the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF), said at least one civilian was killed while two others were wounded during the aerial assault.
The KNDF - an ethnic group with its own army - also alleged that the attack was unprovoked, with the junta destroying a clinic and a house in Kayah State.
Myanmar has suffered ongoing unrest and spiralled into a de facto civil war following the removal of well-liked leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a military coup last February.
Soldiers responded with barbaric force on civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions, including from the UK. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
