After Hurricane Ian raised Lake Okeechobee by 2.5 feet, due largely to storm runoff from the Kissimmee chain of lakes in Central Florida, the Army Corps of Engineers was forced to start releasing water down the Caloosahatchee River and into the Gulf of Mexico to take pressure off the lake's aging dike system. The arrival of Subtropical Storm Nicole could complicate matters further. Subtropical storms are often larger, wetter storms that can inundate a large area in a short period of time. This drone video shows the south end of Lake Okeechobee near Belle Glade and the sugar cane fields that rely on its water.
