Drunk British tourist fined for BIKE through family's glass door in Thailand
A drunk British tourist has been fined for hurling a bicycle through a family's glass door in Thailand.
The unnamed holidaymaker, 30, was seen on CCTV walking up to the house in Krabi province before picking up the bike and throwing it through the glass door shortly after midnight on June 7.
Shocked homeowner Kanitha Kokyai, 20, and her family were jolted awake by the crash and rushed outside to confront the inebriated man. Concerned neighbours also went outside and interrogated the tourist, who merely ignored their questions and walked away in a daze.
Kanitha said she was scared the backpacker might go on a rampage if she chased him so she reported the incident to the Koh Lanta District Police Station.
Officers launched a search and detained the suspect, who allegedly admitted to destroying the glass door. They have not disclosed his identity but said he had agreed to pay for the costs to the door to avoid being prosecuted.
Kanitha said: 'I was confused because the tourist was a complete stranger. I had never met nor spoken to him, so I don't know why he would break down my door.
'I didn't do anything to upset him, it was just a random attack on my property. I understand if he was drunk but he should control himself. I don't want this to happen again to other people.'
Police Colonel Siritham Nakhawan, superintendent of the Koh Lanta Police Station, said: 'The suspect told us he had been drinking heavily and had become angry after losing his phone. He admitted that he did not know the owner of the house and had no reason to damage her property.'
Nakhawan said that the tourist has agreed to shoulder the costs for repair, estimated at 30,000 THB (690 GBP).
He said: 'The negotiations went smoothly and the tourist willingly accepted responsibility for the damage he caused. The case has now been resolved successfully.'
