One person was killed after a 200-year-old bridge collapsed in southern China.

Shocking CCTV footage filmed in Shaoguan City in Guangdong Province on June 8, a portion of the Shuixi Bridge collapsing, leading to a distressing incident of individuals falling into the water.

Preliminary investigations reveal that two people plunged into the river, with one fortunate enough to be rescued and rushed to the hospital. The survivor is currently under observation but is out of immediate danger.

Unfortunately, the other individual lost their life in the incident. Authorities are now conducting further investigations to determine the exact cause of the bridge collapse.

On the morning of Friday, residents residing near the bridge recounted their experiences, expressing shock and concern. The Shuixi Bridge, a historic structure, was located in close proximity to their homes. It had undergone repairs in the past. "We used to cross this bridge frequently, but now that it has collapsed, we have to take a detour," said one resident.

Eyewitnesses reported that at the time of the incident, one person was walking across the bridge while another was cycling.

The Shuixi Bridge, also known as the "Wannian Bridge," was constructed during the Ming Dynasty and is situated in Shuixi Village on the outskirts of Nangong City.

With a history spanning over 200 years, the bridge is an architectural marvel, featuring seven piers and eight arches, and has been designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site. What raises eyebrows is that the bridge underwent renovations just two years ago.
