Thousands of villages affected by intense flooding in Assam, India
The flood situation in Assam remained grave on Saturday with over 500,000 people affected so far, an official report said. Major rivers remained in spate across the state with the meteorological department warning of more rainfall and thunderstorm in different parts.A Central Water Commission report on Friday evening said the Brahmaputra was flowing over the danger level in Nematighat. The water level of the Puthimari and Pagladiya rivers have breached the red mark in Kamrup and Nalbari districts respectively.
On Friday, a person died in Nalbari district in a flood-related incident. Nikhilesh Malla Bujorbaruah was reported missing after accidentally falling into floodwaters near his house. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) later recovered his body. This was the second fatality in the state from this year's first spell of floods. The first death was reported on Thursday in the Tamulpur district.
The report said over 4,95,700 people are hit due to the floods in Baksa, Barpeta, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur, and Udalguri districts. Barpeta is the worst hit with over 3,25,600 people suffering, followed by Nalbari with more than 77,700 people, and Lakhimpur with around 25,700 people suffering, it added. Till Wednesday, nearly 120000 people were suffering from floods across 10 districts of the state. The administration has been operating 83 relief camps in seven districts, where 14,035 persons have taken shelter, and running 79 relief distribution centers in eight districts. Paramilitary forces, NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES), civil administrations, NGOs, and locals have rescued 561 persons from different places. Urban areas were inundated at many places across Barpeta, Darrang, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, and Kokrajhar districts.
