Chinese firefighters catch stray pig-tailed macaque during surprise home visit
A nationally protected pig-tailed macaque strayed into a local residence, boldly beginning a leisurely tour and playful romp through the home.
CCTV footage filmed in Pu'er City in Yunnan Province on June 24, shows a monkey lying on the ground, stretching lazily before wandering upstairs.
At the second-floor stairwell, the curious creature came across a pile of miscellaneous items and, seemingly driven by curiosity, started to frolic and tear into them.
Upon witnessing the situation, the homeowner named Chen Zhaoxia, who is a firefighter, asked for approval and promptly called a colleague, who was also off-duty at home.
The pair swiftly used a net to restrain the monkey, before handing it over to the staff of the Wending Township Forestry Service Center.
After consulting with experts, they confirmed that this was indeed a nationally protected pig-tailed macaque.
The pig-tailed macaque, also known as the northern pig-tailed macaque or flat-topped monkey, belongs to the primate order of Old World monkeys. Its main habitats in China are in southern Yunnan, such as Pu'er and Xishuangbanna, as well as parts of Tibet.
Staff speculated that the macaque had become separated from its group and entered the residence in search of food.
After checking that the monkey had not sustained any injuries, the firefighters and forestry service staff brought it to a monkey activity area far from the village on the same afternoon and released it back into the wild.
