What’s going on here?? Two male parrots defend a nest hollow – where’s the female?
Gaudy Red-capped Parrots (Purpureicephalus spurius) and Twenty-eight Parrots (Barnardius zonarius semitorquatus) are only found in in south-western Australia. This strange saga began with two male Red-capped Parrots fighting with a male Twenty-eight Parrot near a potential nest hollow in a Wandoo tree (Eucalyptus wandoo). The Twenty-eight Parrot lost the fight, and the male Red-capped Parrots sat together for a while near the hollow, calling quietly. One of the male Red-capped Parrots then moved to inspect the nest hollow. There was no sign of a female Red-capped Parrot anywhere – it’s a mystery..
