Indian train worker on video call dumps bag on throttle and derails train... and stays on his call!
Extraordinary CCTV footage from inside a train driver's cab in India showed a young man apparently derail a train after dumping his bag on top of the vehicle's throttle while he was on a video call.
The train, which was previously stationary, jumped its tracks and climbed onto a platform in the incident, in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, on the night of Tuesday 26 September.
A woman was injured in the shocking incident.
The footage opens with a man in a white shirt, presumed to be a Railways employee, at the controls.
He appears to bring the train to a controlled halt and then picks up a bag from the floor of his cab and leaves.
A second man, in a blue T-shirt, then enters and closes the cab door.
The man is on a video call on his phone and, with his attention seemingly entirely on that, takes off his bag and dumps it on the control panel, including the throttle!
The cab door then swings open and it is evident the train is now picking up speed.
Caught by surprise, the man -- identified as Sachin -- grabs at the controls and slams on the brakes, but still doesn't let go of his phone or end his call.
The train then rolls back off the platform after which he takes a few more seconds to finally wrap up his chat and end his call.
Divisional Railway Manager Tej Prakash Agrawal said five people, including Sachin, had been suspended and a high-level probe ordered to ascertain the "exact cause of the incident".
Authorities are also looking into the possibility that Sachin, who reportedly went into the cabin to get keys, was drunk.
