Monkeys climbed all over a woman while she posed in front of an ancient Khmer temple.

Footage shows the tourist with three macaques - two clutching her hair while the other one was on her back before jumping away - as she stood outside the Phra Prang Sam Yot with friends in Lopburi, Thailand on January 3.

According to the holidaymaker, the primates turned aggressive when they approached to get food but they had none. The animals crowded around her and she frantically shook them off as they clung to her.

Lopburi, which has a Khmer temple in the centre of town, has become a popular tourist destination because of its large population of monkeys. The monkeys are mostly long-tailed macaques, and they can be found all over the city, from the temples to the streets.

However, they can also be aggressive and have been known to steal food and belongings.

The Phra Prang Sam Yot temple seen in the video was built by King Jayavarman VII of the mighty Khmer Empire, which stretched across Southeast Asia.

However, Khmer society moved further south for maritime trade opportunities in the 15th century, abandoning its lesser temples in the outer-reachers of their territory, in what became Siam and then Thailand.
