Police raid unlicensed cannabis bar with underage customers in Thailand
Police have raided an unlicensed cannabis bar with underage customers in Thailand.
Officers busted the establishment called 'Nang Yan Tom Gun By Lang Cen', where they found around 80 youths, including a 12-year-old girl, reportedly consuming kratom tea and marijuana in northern Chiang Rai province on November 25.
Authorities found that the shop was unauthorised to distribute the controlled substances, adding there was drug paraphernalia found inside.
Police also confiscated four modified motorcycles without ownership licenses parked in front of the store. They said the shop supervisor has been detained for violating several regulatory laws.
The local educational office, local social development and human security agency, and related organisations, questioned the youths who were at the scene to find how they had learned about the shop.
The working committee in charge of the raid has recommended that the store be shut down.
Kratom, an herbal folk 'remedy' that has psychoactive properties, became legal in Thailand in 2021, while cannabis was de-listed as a banned narcotic in June 2022.
Bungling Thai authorities are now scrambling to regulate its use as officials report a rising number of marijuana addictions per month.
The Ministry of Public Health said an average of 72 marijuana addiction cases per month was recorded in the first half of 2022. After cannabis was effectively legalised, the number nearly quadrupled to 282 monthly cases from June to November 2022 alone.
