Cape Town, South Africa - 22 December 2023: Residents of Bo-Kaap, one of South Africa’s oldest neighbourhoods has been protesting every Friday since 7 October in support of Palestinians. Bo-Kaap known as the Slave Quarter or the Malay Quarter during colonial times is still home to descendants of the colonial slaves brought to the Cape of Good Hope by the British and Dutch from Malaysia, Java and Indonesia.

Jacky Poking, a resident of Bo-Kaap, said the community will continue to show solidarity with Palestinians because they also fear the possibility of losing their homes through gentrification. Many residents in the community have also painted Palestinian flags on the walls of their homes.
