A shocked passenger showed why shorts should not be worn on planes - with these revolting photos of a budget airline's cabin.

Tanakawee Tantrajin was horrified by the state of the Boeing 737 operated by low-cost carrier Nok Air during a flight in Thailand on February 2.

Pictures show thick layers of dirt on the seats and debris littering the floor. The synthetic leather on the seats was flaking away - with holes in one of the seats - and the windows were caked in grime.

Footage shows the disgusted passenger using a piece of tissue to wipe a thick layer of dirt from one of the plane seats.

Tanakawee said he had been on two flights with the same airline and the cabin was dirty each time.

He said: 'I found the seats black, unclean, and dirty so I sent a report to the airline.

'I have to fly with them every Friday and Sunday until March, so I wanted their planes to be clean. They replied by saying they would do a deep clean, but I think regular cleaning and changing the upholstery is enough.

'I don't want anything from the airline but I believe cleanliness should be a standard for service providers.'

Nok Air, which has distinctive bird liveries, has a fleet of 10 single-aisle jets operating short-haul domestic flights around the country. Some of the jets will fly up to 10 flights in a single 24-hour period - with little time for staff or cleaners to clean the cabin before new passengers board.

The airline told Tanakawee they would clean the plane ahead of his next flight.

HYGIENE TIPS WHEN TRAVELLING BY PLANES

Wear trousers and long-sleeve tops to protect skin (avoid skirts or shorts)
Don't store phones or books in the pouch as it is rarely cleaned thoroughly
Avoid touching or resting against the plane's windows
Keep shoes on during short-haul flights or use slippers on long-haul
Blow your nose during and after flights to expel bacteria
After landing, avoid lying on beds or sofas in dirty clothes
Change clothes when reaching the destination
Always wash hair and shower after flights
