Huge buffalo herd joins grumpy elephants at watering hole during incredible safari moment
It was during the heat of the day, and we were out on a safari in the Kruger National Park. While looking for wild animals for a while, we finally spotted something and decided to stop on the banks of a dry river. On the opposite side there was a watering hole with a small herd of elephants gathered around it, busy quenching their thirsts. While admiring the beautiful sight, I started hearing noises coming from the bushes a little further away down the riverbed. Suddenly a few buffalo appeared and before we knew it, there were masses of buffalo literally pouring out of the bush, through the dry riverbed, heading straight towards the watering hole where the elephants were at. The buffalo just kept coming and coming and we estimated roughly three hundred individuals in the herd. In my mind I knew that elephants normally do not like to share water with other animals and was wondering how the small herd of elephants will deal with such a large buffalo herd. It was so exciting to watch two of Africa’s big five animals joining at the same watering hole at the same time. It soon became clear that the elephants were not happy at all with this big takeover of their watering hole. With flapping ears and with intimidating behavior and trumpeting, the elephants made it clear that the buffalo herd was not welcome. It was a losing battle for the elephants and besides a few individuals being chased, the rest of the buffalo herd couldn’t really care less and continued drinking water and moving along. We could see the elephants felt very much out of place. The buffaloes still didn’t care and slowly left the watering hole, grazing along as they slowly moved off. The elephants ended up being scattered all over and, in the end, managed to regroup with loud screams and trumpeting sounds before leaving the watering hole, heading back into the bush. After all the action it was dead quiet again, no animals at the water and it was as if nothing has happened. Definitely one our finest safari sightings in a while.
