Adorable video of a young elephant chasing a small bird around a watering hole in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

In the clip, filmed September 26, a young elephant stalks the bird, a hamerkop, while it was walking on the edge of the river before trumpeting, scaring the hamerkop away.

“The bird flew ahead a few meters every time the elephant got too close for comfort. With ears flapping and trunk swinging around, the young elephant trumpeted once to add to his intimidation tactic,” says Edrich Schafer the filmer.

“Finally when the elephant reached his herd members he suddenly stopped for a drink and lost complete interest."

We were slowly driving along a river one afternoon during a self-drive safari in the Kruger Park. There were elephants all along the river that came to drink during the blazing afternoon heat. Our attention was suddenly drawn to a young elephant bull estimated at ten to twelve years of age. To our amazement this cheeky bull elephant, clearly in his teen years filled with testosterone and lots of attitude, started following a small bird we could hardly see at first. It was dull brown and blended well into the brown back ground. This bird is known as the hamerkop. The shape of its head is reminiscent of a hammer which, getting its name after the Afrikaans word for hammerhead. These birds are found around wetlands, estuaries and along riverbanks. On this day the young elephant bull decided that no matter what the size difference, he will show this bird who is the boss of this riverbank. The elephant kept following the bird, his pace getting quicker and quicker. As the elephant walked faster, the bird just walked faster. The bird flew ahead a few meters every time the elephant got too close for comfort. With ears flapping and trunk swinging around, the young elephant trumpeted once to add to his intimidation tactic. Finally when the elephant reached his herd members he suddenly stopped for a drink and lost complete interest. The hamerkop continued along the riverbank as if nothing happened. This seemed like the most uneven weighed contest with this teen elephant already over two thousand kilograms and the hamerkop averaging at five hundred grams.
