This is the dramatic moment RNLI volunteers saved a kayaker with a broken neck in Devon, England.

Neil Bascombe, from Poole, Dorset, was exploring coves around Blackpool Sands, Dartmouth, during a family holiday when he slipped on rocks, fracturing his spine and neck, and was left in critical condition.

Speaking after recovering from the incident on June 9, Neil thanked the RNLI volunteers who rescued him after the serious accident.

He said: 'If I hadn't been rescued I wouldn't be here. The RNLI were fantastic. There was no other way I was getting off those rocks.'

Neil's sons, Marcus and Jason, were crucial to the rescue. Marcus found his father injured on the rocks and alerted the family, who then called the Coastguard.

Despite rising tides and Neil's worsening condition, the Dart RNLI's D Class lifeboat crew arrived and provided medical aid, and transferred Neil to safety aboard the Atlantic 85 lifeboat.

Neil received extensive treatment at Torbay Hospital, where the full extent of his injuries was assessed.

His wife, Jackie, highlighted the RNLI's crucial role in saving Neil's life with their swift and dedicated response.

The RNLI saves lives at sea through its 24-hour search and rescue services around the UK and Ireland. With 238 lifeboat stations and over 240 lifeguard units across the UK and the Channel Islands, its volunteers are dedicated to maritime safety.
