Mount Lewotobi Laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia erupted again accompanied by strong roars on Tuesday 12 November 2024 evening.
This mountain continues to rumble with strong booms, it has even been going on for 30 minutes. Ejections of incandescent lava were also observed above the mountain peaks and flowing in all directions.
Residents in refugee camps began to panic. Some of them came out to watch the mountain erupting.
A number of police officers continue to guard the front of the Konga refugee camp. Motorists who wanted to pass towards Maumere were diverted to another route.
The roar of Mount Lewotobi could be heard as far away as Maumere City, Sikka Regency. Mar Pemba, a resident of Maumere, said he was shocked.
“We also heard rumblings here. "It's quite strong," said Mar when contacted, Tuesday night.
According to him, tonight's eruption was quite powerful. Because for the past few days, Maumere City has only been affected by ashfall, but this time they heard a roar.
"We hope that everything is fine and that the volcanic activity of Mount Lewotobi Laki can subside," he asked.
Mount Lewotobi Male Observation Post Officer, Bobyson Lamanepa said, the mountain experienced another eruption since 19.18 WITA, on Tuesday 12 November 2024 evening. however, the height of the ash column was not observed. This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 48 mm and a temporary duration of approximately 1 hour 55 minutes.
“There was a loud roar. "The eruption was still ongoing while the report was being prepared," he said.
It is known that as a result of the eruption of Mount Lewotobi, 10 people died and approximately 13,000 people were displaced. The eruption also caused 84 flights to be cancelled, including 64 international flights, on Wednesday 13 November 2024. The impact of Mount Lewotobi's eruption caused volcanic ash to spread widely from Flores, to Lombok Island and Bali Island.
Meanwhile, 3,115 people at the foot of Mount Lewotobi are running out of food. The government is expected to immediately send aid there considering that the village is isolated due to the eruption.
There are 1,036 people affected in Lewotobi Village, 1,376 people in Lewoawang Village, and 703 people in Riangrita Village. The three villages are in Ile Bura District, one of the districts affected by the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki.
Nikolaus Nara, Secretary of Lewotobi Village, Ile Bura District, wrote to the East Flores Regional Disaster Management Agency two days ago, namely 11 November 2024. As of Wednesday 13 November 2024 afternoon, the local government had not responded to the letter.
Nikolaus said that due to the eruption, the people of Lewotobi could not go to the garden or market to buy food. The village, which is on the southern side of the mountain at an altitude of 1,584 above sea level, has been isolated for the past week.
