This is the shocking moment a huge sinkhole opened up in a road in India.

The middle of the motorway had collapsed, creating a 20ft ( 6m) wide hole that resulted in a traffic jam in Punjab on December 16.

Local media reports that the road caved in early morning.

The Municipal Commissioner and other officials visited the site to assess the situation with the police temporarily barricading the area to prevent road incidents.

No one was reportedly injured from the emergence of the sinkhole.

Residents are urging the government to take action to fix the roads and prevent similar incidents from happening.

A few months ago, another street cavity was spotted in a nearby city due to poor infrastructure, leading to substandard roads and drainage systems.

On September 20, a lorry fell into a sinkhole in the middle of the road in Pune, Maharashtra.

Sinkholes occur when the ground beneath the surface collapses or sinks due to several natural or human-made processes. The holes can range in size from small depressions to large caverns, causing significant damage.
