This is the shocking moment angry passengers who were locked out of a full train began smashing the carriage windows.

Footage shows an enraged local breaking the glass of the entry door with a heavy stone while others dismantled the iron bars of the windowpanes to gain access to the coach in the Basti district of Uttar Pradesh, India, on December 17.

Officials said the passengers had secured the doors to prevent further overcrowding, as the vehicle bound for Mumbai, was already at full capacity and could not accommodate more.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Basti has taken action by lodging a formal complaint under the Railway Act (Section 145) against the commuters responsible for the vandalism of the 15101 Chhapra-Mumbai Antyodaya Express coach.

Chandra Mohan Mishra, the Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of Northeastern Railways, said: 'We obtained footage of the vandalism, and our teams are diligently working to identify the individuals involved.'

India is notorious for its jam-packed trains and overcrowded conditions, transporting millions of people daily.

The ageing tracks, trains and stations suffer from chronic underinvestment - leading to chaos for commuters.
