A road collapsed in Indonesia amid weather chaos.

A section of road measuring 23 feet (7 metres) in length and 9.8ft (3m) deep collapsed in Watuawu Village, Lage District, following torrential rainfall on January 23.

The incident caused significant traffic disruptions, forcing vehicles to seek alternative routes.

Footage shows the damage, showing massive cracks in the middle of the highway and severely eroded ground.

Police Inspector Faturrahman stated: 'The alternative route can only be used by vehicles alternately, resulting in long queues of vehicles snaking around since 11:00 WITA. This location is prone to landslides because it is in a river fault area.'

Earlier, on January 17, more than 11,000 residents were displaced after storms destroyed bridges, houses, vehicles, and public facilities. Continuous heavy rainfall has forced families in some affected regions to evacuate.

In a separate incident on January 18 in Kuningan Regency, West Java, three houses collapsed due to erosion caused by prolonged rainfall.

Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia have been experiencing the monsoon season, which typically brings soaring temperatures followed by intense afternoon rainstorms. These conditions have triggered widespread flash floods and landslides across the region.
