A stranded deer was rescued from a frozen lake in New York.

Frankie Floridia from Strong Island and Ryan Gilmartin from the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Centre retrieved the hapless three-year-old doe stuck on the icy water at Southhaven Park in Suffolk County, Yaphank.

Locals spotted the animal wandering onto the ice and plunging into the frigid water, prompting them to immediately call for help.

Dramatic footage shows the two rescuers aboard a boat heading towards the animal.

They can be seen digging through the ice to create a path to the stranded deer.

Moments later, they gently grabbed the hoofed creature and placed it in the wooden watercraft.

Local media reported that the doe was transported to the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Centre.

Ryan Gilmartin said: 'The ice kept getting thicker as we approached, but it became thin enough near the deer to push through.'

'It is currently recovering well and will soon be returned to the wild.'

Frankie Floridia expressed his relief.

He said: 'Seeing her standing, seeing her able to live another life, it's just a great feeling.'
