Terrified passengers doused a power bank that burst into flames mid-flight over China.

Footage shows frantic fliers and flight attendants dumping bottles of water on the burning device inside the overhead compartment of Hong Kong Airlines flight HX115.

The Airbus A320 had taken off from the Chinese city of Hangzhou bound for neighbouring country Hong Kong but had to be diverted to the Fuzhou Changle International Airport following the incident on March 20.

In a statement, Hong Kong Airlines said: 'Hong Kong Airlines flight HX115, departing from Hangzhou to Hong Kong today, diverted and landed safely in Fuzhou Changle International Airport due to a fire in the overhead compartment, which was successfully extinguished.'

The passengers were later evacuated via emergency stairs, and transported away from the plane through a shuttle bus.
