Step aside, internet foodies—Rico the Brazilian porcupine is the new ASMR star at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! Known for his irresistible snack sounds and tree-climbing finesse, Rico recently stole the show as he crunched his way through a leafy feast, delighting fans with every bite.

Native to the tropical rainforests of northern and eastern South America, the Brazilian porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) spends most of its life in the treetops. With large curved claws, a bare-soled grip, and a muscular prehensile tail that acts like a fifth limb, Rico is perfectly equipped to navigate his leafy world in the Children’s Zoo exhibit.

Whether he’s nibbling on fruit, bark, or tender shoots, Rico’s mealtime is more than adorable—it’s educational. These peaceful climbers are equipped with sharp quills for defense, but at the Cincinnati Zoo, Rico shows his softer (and crunchier) side, bringing rainforest sounds and smiles to guests of all ages.
