LANDRUM, S.C. — A Landrum police officer narrowly avoided being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic in a school zone that was also an active work zone, according to the Landrum Police Department.

The incident occurred as the officer stood in the roadway wearing a reflective vest and managing traffic flow near construction activity. Police said the driver failed to notice traffic cones, warning lights, nearby workers and the officer in the lane, indicating the driver was likely distracted.

No injuries were reported, but officials said the close call highlights the serious dangers of distracted driving, particularly in areas involving children and road crews.

Police are urging motorists to remain alert at all times, especially in school and work zones, and to avoid using phones or other distractions while driving.
