Injuries as sightseers thrown off malfunctioning magic carpet ride at tourist hotspot in China
On May 3, a malfunction occurred at the sightseeing magic carpet attraction in the Tanyi Valley Scenic Area in Zhangjiakou, Hebei, resulting in injuries to several tourists.
Video footage taken by witnesses shows the magic carpet descending when it suddenly began to accelerate uncontrollably. Passengers were thrown off and landed on the ground below, with many piling on top of each other in chaos. Multiple police cars and ambulances soon arrived at the scene, and the injured were taken to the hospital.
One tourist said, "Around 4 p.m., our two families—six people—were on the ride. The descending magic carpet seemed to fail—it went extremely fast, and everyone got thrown down and injured. My mom broke her leg." Recalling the incident, the tourist added, "It was terrifying—the speed was just too fast!"
A staff member at the Tanyi Valley Scenic Area stated that the site has been in operation for years and recently reopened after renovations. Some passengers were injured, but none seriously, and the exact number is still being confirmed. The magic carpet ride has been suspended and is currently under inspection.
