WICHITA, Kan. — Kijani, a 23-day-old African elephant calf at Sedgwick County Zoo, was recently seen playing with a ball, offering a glimpse of his emerging playful nature.

Born April 14, 2025, to first-time mother Xolani, Kijani is the second calf welcomed by the zoo in less than a week. His birth follows that of Bomani, who arrived April 10.

Zoo officials say Kijani and his mother are doing well, continuing to bond and socialize with other members of the elephant herd behind the scenes. The playful moment with the ball reflects healthy development and social enrichment for the growing calf.

Both calves were born as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ African Elephant Species Survival Plan, aimed at supporting the sustainability of the species in human care.
