This is the spectacular moment Mount Lewotobi spewed ash and lava as it erupted in Indonesia.

Footage shows the volcano gushing bright orange molten material that scorched its slopes on Flores Island on May 18.

Flashes of volcanic lightning sparked near the peak as villagers watched the magmatic eruption, which they said was accompanied by a loud bang.

On April 27, the volcano emitted lava that flowed around its crater.

The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said Mount Lewotobi sent a 13,000ft (4,000m) ash plume into the sky.

Volcano observer Herman Yosef Mboro said: 'There had been several eruptions since morning. The eruption also continued until Monday morning, May 19.

'However, the height of the ash column from the eruption was not observed because it was covered by thick fog.'

Herman added that there was one eruption earthquake and eight tremor earthquakes accompanying the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

'Continuous eruption tremors accompanied by a loud rumbling sound were heard.'

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki last previously erupted on March 20, disrupting travel across tourist island Bali around 500 kilometres away.

It is located on Flores Island, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its high seismic and volcanic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates.
