Phoenix, United States - May 18, 2025 05/17/2025 11:00 pm GMT-0700 PHOENIX, Ariz. – According to the Tempe police sergeant at the scene, Tempe police officers spotted a stolen BMW that had fled from Scottsdale police officers earlier in the night. The vehicle was observed driving recklessly at a high rate of speed. Tempe PD requested air support assistance from Mesa PD due to the suspect's reckless driving behavior. The Mesa Police helicopter responded and quickly located the vehicle. Officers initially planned to perform a traffic stop on the suspect, but due to the suspect's speed and reckless nature, officers chose to track the vehicle from a distance and by air in order to avoid escalating the situation. The suspect continued to drive recklessly through the cities of Tempe, Scottsdale and eventually entered the city of Phoenix. Once in Phoenix, the Mesa Police helicopter returned to Mesa, and the Phoenix police helicopter took over aerial surveillance. The exact path of the suspect was not specified by Tempe Police; however, officers confirmed the suspect traveled south on I-17 from the Pinnacle Peak area and eventually entered the downtown Phoenix area. The suspect maintained a high rate of speed while driving recklessly through the duration of the surveillance operation. A short time later, the suspect began driving northbound on 7th Street from Roosevelt Street. A collision occurred as the suspect ran the red light, traveling north on 7th Street through McDowell Road. The stolen BMW was struck by a Dodge Charger, which also hit a black minivan. Officers from the Tempe Police Department and Phoenix police officers quickly converged on the scene of the crash and took the suspect into custody. The suspect has been identified only as a juvenile male. The Phoenix Fire Department responded to evaluate the occupants of the collision. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in stable condition for precautionary evaluation. He will be released into Tempe police custody once medically cleared and faces several felony charges. All other occupants involved in the collision refused medical attention. The Tempe Police Department is taking the lead as the handling agency for this incident.
