US, Phoenix: Phoenix Fatal I-17 Wrong-Way Collision With Sound On Tape
Phoenix, United States - June 04, 2025 06/04/2025 03:10 am GMT-0700 PHOENIX, Ariz. – Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded to reports of a sedan driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-17 near 7th Avenue around 3:20 a.m. Initial reports stated that the driver was travelling against traffic on the shoulder of the mainline I-17. A short time later, troopers received reports of a head-on collision involving the wrong-way vehicle. Troopers arrived and located the wrong-way sedan and a white pickup truck blocking multiple lanes. The drivers of both vehicles were trapped due to severe collision damage. Phoenix Fire Department crews responded to the scene and began working to extricate both drivers. The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as a male adult. He was extricated by Phoenix firefighters and transported to a local trauma center with serious, possibly life-threatening injuries. The driver of the wrong-way sedan has been identified as a female in her 20s. She was extricated by Phoenix Fire Department personnel and pronounced deceased at the scene. A southbound hard closure was established for I-17. All southbound traffic was diverted off the mainline at the 7th Avenue off-ramp. The closure was expected to remain in place throughout the morning while troopers investigated the incident.
