Los Angeles, United States - June 17, 2025 06/17/2025 02:20 am GMT-0700 NORTH HOLLWOOD, LOS ANGLELES, Calif. – A double fatal traffic collision that took the life of an off-duty sheriff's deputy occurred on the westbound U.S. 101 Freeway at the Tujunga Avenue on-ramp early Tuesday morning. The California Highway Patrol received reports of the incident around 2:20 a.m., with sounds of the crash audible over the line, though the reporting party was unresponsive. In a press release of the incident, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department identified off-duty Deputy Marcos Pena, Jr., 31, as the deputy who succumbed to injuries at the scene. It was reported that two unknown colored sedans and a box truck were involved in the collision, blocking the fast lane. As first responders arrived at 2:47 a.m. additional units requested a hard closure of the westbound U.S. 134 to westbound U.S. 101, diverting all traffic to northbound U.S. 170. They also needed to close all lanes of the northbound U.S. 101 to westbound U.S. 101 for an unknown duration. At 2:55 a.m., two vehicles were reported blocking the lanes, but the cause of the collision remained unclear. The Los Angeles County Coroner was notified at approximately 3:11 a.m., as responders confirmed that all lanes of the main portion of the freeway were blocked. Two deceased victims were seen in the center divider with major damage to the box truck. It is unknown if the victims were on the freeway on foot, in another vehicle, or in the box truck. No other vehicles were clearly seen from our photographers vantage point. The fast lane is currently blocked, but CHP West Valley has all lanes closed with crime scene tape.
