KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. — Airmen from the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron took to the skies June 18 to fly into Hurricane Erick, marking the first storm mission of the 2025 hurricane season.

Departing from Keesler Air Force Base, the squadron—commonly known as the Hurricane Hunters—began their critical work tracking the Pacific storm. As the only Department of Defense unit tasked with flying into tropical storms and hurricanes, they play a vital role in collecting real-time atmospheric data.

During the flight, crews gathered information on wind speed, pressure, temperature, and humidity, helping forecasters improve storm models and enhance public safety.

The U.S. Air Force released video of the mission, captured by Jessica L. Kendziorek, showing the aircraft and personnel in action as they braved turbulent conditions inside the storm.
