Residents were left stranded when a flash flood surged through a street as they returned home.

Footage shows them battling knee-deep torrents that turned the road into a muddy river in Davao del Sur, the Philippines, on June 18.

They had gone to check if a nearby bridge was still passable when the sudden deluge struck.

Rosemarie Pasinabao Hibaya said she and her neighbours reached home safely but moved cautiously through the rising waters.

She said: ‘The irrigation had overflowed and submerged our houses. We had to wait for the water to recede.'

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
