Bakersfield, United States - June 29, 2025 06/29/2025 04:37 pm GMT-0700 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A 1-year-old boy is dead and a 2-year-old boy is hospitalized after being left inside a hot car Sunday afternoon as temperatures in Bakersfield neared 101 degrees. Officers responded around 4:37 p.m. to the 10 block of South Real Road for a report of an unresponsive child, according to the Bakersfield Police Department. Medical personnel transported both children to a local hospital, where the 1-year-old died. The 2-year-old remains in stable condition and has been placed in protective custody, police said. Investigators believe the children were left in the car for more than two hours while their mother was inside a nearby medical spa, according to police. The mother was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse, police said. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A heavy police presence and crime scene investigators were seen Sunday afternoon at a business center near Stockdale Highway and Real Road. Video from the scene shows crime scene tape surrounding a parking lot near 33 S. Real Road, with officers moving in and out of a building at the location. According to the PulsePoint emergency notification system, a medical emergency with a large response was reported in the area at 4:37 p.m. The exact nature of the incident remains unknown, and the Bakersfield Police Department has not released further details. According to broadcastify radio traffic playback, police responded to a possible 1-year-old not breathing, and CPR was in progress.
